Oh, the Mercy and the Grace of God! – Part 3
“Then the Lord provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant.” (Jonah 4:6 NIV)
Well, Jonah did finally go to Nineveh; the people turned from their sins; and the Bible says that “God didn’t bring on them the destruction he had threatened.” And what did Jonah do after all that? He had a pity party! Anyone would say, “Honestly, God? Just be done with this guy! Can’t you find somebody else? I‘m tired of reading about him. He’s running from you; then he’s in a fish; then he cries out; then you deliver him; then he still doesn’t want to go; then he goes; then he gets mad that the people are blessed… Who is this guy?”
But I love this about God: instead of showing impatience with Jonah, he looks down and says, “Oh, it’s hot. Jonah needs a little shade.” Shade? He needs a reprimand! And yet God says, “No, he’s in discomfort. I have to provide a leafy plant to cover him.”
Who else is like our God? How many can bear witness to the fact that there have been times when you’ve been at your worst, and you know it’s not going well with you in your walk with God, and he has still shown you kindness? It’s enough to make you say, “Oh God, who are you? What are you doing? Just let me be!” And God says, “No, I have to take care of you, because you’re special to me!” Just as he did with Jonah.
Oh, the mercy and the grace of God! Let’s thank him today for his patience and his compassion!
