“Through Jesus… let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.” (Hebrews 13:15 NIV)
Before Jesus came to this world to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins once and for all, there were animal sacrifices that were made to have the sins of the people covered. That’s because without the shedding of blood, the Bible says, there is no remission of sin. But there were also thank offerings that were given in the Old Testament when God had come through in some way.
As Christians, we have our sins covered by the blood of Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, who is also our faithful high priest. The sin question has thus been solved by a compassionate Savior who was willing to die in our place and overcome death, that it would no longer have a hold over us. But we also need to offer thanks to the Lord when he comes through in our lives in some way. The Bible says that every perfect gift comes from our heavenly Father, so we always have a reason to give thanks.
Maybe something happened this week for which you need to give thanks. God delivered, supplied a job, mended a broken heart, brought healing, answered the petition of your heart. If so, tell him, today: “Lord, I don’t have a lamb or grain to offer as the Israelites did, but I have my heart. I want to thank you, because you have been good to me.”
