Is This for Real? – Part 1

“But God came to Abimelek in a dream and said, ‘You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.’” (Genesis 20:3 NIV)

Is this for real?  Could it be true?  Is there such power available to us?  Let’s answer these questions and explain further by looking at an episode in the life of Abraham, the father of the Jewish people.  God had told him to leave his homeland and go to a place he would show him, and he ended up in Canaan, in what we now call Israel.  In his trajectory, Abraham did a very foolish thing.  He went to a place where God had never told him to go; he became afraid that the people there would find his wife so beautiful that they would kill him for her; and he ended up lying, saying that his wife Sarah was not his wife but, rather, his sister.  Although Abraham was an amazing man of faith, this story shows that we can all break down at times.

What happened was that the big guy on the block in that area, by the name of Abimelek, heard that Sarah was Abraham’s sister; and he decided to take her for his own.  God then visited him in a dream and said to him, “You’re a dead man, because you have someone else’s wife, and he’s a prophet on top of that.”  Abimelek in essence, replied, “What kind of prophet is that?  He just said, ‘She’s my sister.’!”  Well, after this visitation from God, Abimelek decided he was going to change matters, but God had already shut down the ability of every woman in Abimelek’s household to conceive a child.  Abimelek confronted Abraham, asking him what in the world he was thinking when he introduced Sarah as his sister.  Abraham then prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek’s people.

So Abraham prayed, and something that God had already decreed, was now changed.  There was judgment on the house of Abimelek; but Abraham prayed, and God changed the way he was dealing with them.  Is this for real?  A human being prays, and God who has been treating people one way, now treats them another way?  He now opened the wombs of the women in the palace—all because a guy prayed?  No, that can’t be for real.  God sent supernatural help from heaven; he took away a situation that was negative and turned it into a positive situation.  And he did it—when?  When a man prayed!

This same power is available to you and me today.
