While You and I Were Sleeping…

"He always lives to intercede for [us]." (Hebrews 7:25 NIV)

Did you know that while you were sleeping last night, Jesus was praying for you?  In fact, the Bible says that as both a faithful high priest and the perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity once and for all, Jesus always lives to intercede for those who come to God through him.  That means that he’s interceding right now that we might have grace and peace and strength and the assurance of our salvation.  No wonder the ministry of intercession is dear to the heart of God.

What is intercession, actually?  It’s touching God with one hand and touching another soul with the other hand in prayer.  It means that we forget about our own needs and problems, and we stand in the gap for someone else (Ezekiel 22:30).  It’s what Moses did when Israel’s disobedience incurred the wrath of God; and the Bible says that because of Moses’ prayers, they were saved from destruction (Psalm 106:23).  The amazing thing is that as we concentrate on praying for others, the Lord takes care of our needs as well.

We have a loving Father; and with this in mind, we can expect him to answer when we are praying for another soul, no matter how difficult their situation might be.  The act of praying depends, not on what we feel, but on faith in God to do what only he can do.  Let’s lift up someone before God’s throne today.

Read Hebrews 7:23-28.
