Bread from Heaven – Part 2
“… The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.” (Exodus 16:18 NIV)
For forty years, God provided the Israelites with bread in the form of manna as they wandered in the wilderness. It is interesting to read in the biblical account that everyone had as much as they needed. Some needed more; some needed less. What does that teach us? It shows us that there may be seasons in our lives when we need more of him—more grace, more power, and perhaps even extra love. Why? Because we might find ourselves in a situation in which we just need more.
Of course, there is never a day when we don’t need the Lord. We need him every day; but don’t we all go through times of stress? In those times, we may need more from God. I have had days when I didn’t even think I could make it through the day without God helping me moment by moment, and I’m sure you have faced those times as well. Yes, you needed God yesterday, but because of whatever has happened since, you may need him more today. And we always need extra when we’re ministering to other people. God’s promise is that whether we need little or a lot, whether we’re on vacation or under the gun, he has whatever we need. He says, “Do you need a lot today because you’re in that season in life? I have a lot for you!” The capacity is determined by our need, by our openness, and by the stress that we’re under. The bottom line is that whatever we need, God is able to supply.
It is encouraging to know that the Israelites who needed more manna did not have more than they needed; and those who needed less, didn’t have less than they needed. They all had whatever they needed. The rule from God is that he will supply all of our needs, whatever they may be.
You may say to me, “But you don’t even know what I need!” I don’t, but God has said that he will supply all your needs. There may be another time in your life when you may say, “I don’t really need that much today. God is so good; I’m just praising God.” There are different capacities for us every day; but whatever it is that we need, whether little or much, he will give it to us.
I want to declare this to you today: Whatever you need from God, he is able to provide. Whether you’re saying, “But I need so much…” or you’re confessing, “I don’t need that much at the moment, thank God… “ he has exactly what you need.
