Your Temple I Will Be
“….for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.” (1 Corinthians 3:17b NIV)
We may all have different callings, yet what we’re all called to be—not only collectively, but also individually—is the temple of the Holy Spirit. That is why our happiest and most fulfilled days will be those times when we know that God is possessing us and that we’re his temple; when he’s working and moving in our lives. The Bible says, “Be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18), and since here the Apostle Paul is addressing Christians who are already sealed with the Holy Spirit, the implication is the following: “Keep being filled with the Holy Spirit.” Why? So that you can be that temple that he planned for you to be!
An introspective approach to Christianity, whereby you grit your teeth and focus on trying to change the negatives in your life—a bad temper, jealousy, the tendency to gossip, etc.—won’t make you more like Christ, no matter how sincere you might be in your desire to change. You see, the best way to drive out the junk in your life is not to fight against the junk. Let the Holy Spirit possess every part of your life, and he himself will drive out the junk for you. When the Holy Spirit is shaping your thoughts and your desires, then you desire holy things. Why? Because he’s the Holy Spirit! How would I desire an unholy thing if he’s controlling me?
Let’s pray today, “God, you called me to be your temple. Keep filling me with your Spirit, dear Lord, and your temple I will be!”
