In Spite of Our Shortcomings

“But when King Uzziah became strong, he grew arrogant, and that led to his downfall.” (2 Chronicles 26:16a)

King Uzziah started well by doing those things that were pleasing to the Lord.  He won significant victories over the enemies of Judah, for the Lord was with him.  But when Uzziah became strong, he became arrogant and lost his sense of needing God.  That’s the problem with blessings in our lives sometimes.  Instead of creating a thoughtful heart that wants to draw closer to Jesus in a deeper way, we tend toward pride and self-dependence.  Today, let’s humble ourselves as we remember that all God’s favor in the past came not because of who we are, but rather in spite of our failings and shortcomings.  It all happened because of Christ’s amazing grace and mercy.  Praise God!
