God Our Father, Friend and Helper – Part 1
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” (Romans 8:16 NIV)
God reveals himself to us in the Bible as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And in those three persons, who are different and yet just one God, there are truths for us to hold on to.
Scripture says that when you become a Christian, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you and bears witness with your own spirit that you are more than just an American or Polish or Kenyan or Greek or Mexican or Jamaican. The Holy Spirit testifies with your spirit that you are a child of God; you are in God’s family. That makes God your father.
There is so much that can be written about the Fatherhood of God; but there is one important thing that God wants you to know today: If you’re a believer, God is your father, and he loves you. He proved it by giving up his only Son for you and me. Think about it: I wouldn’t give up my son or daughter for anyone. Would you? Yet, God the Father loved you so much that he gave his only Son, Jesus, to die in your place and in my place, so that our sins would be forgiven and that we might have eternal life (John 3:16).
That is a truth we need to embrace. But the devil is always whispering the opposite, telling us that that no one loves us, no one cares, we can’t trust anyone; and on top of that, that even God can’t love us because we’re not what we should be. In fact, Satan will fight us tooth and nail so that we won’t accept the wonderful truth of God’s love. He tries to distract us, saying, “Do a little more; get your life together first; learn some more verses; and then God will love you.” That’s a lie! We have to answer the enemy of our souls, saying, “My heavenly father loves me today, and his love is unconditional!”
