A Continual Feast
“All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.” (Proverbs 15:15 NIV)
Joy-filled believers don’t require endless holidays or nonstop entertainment to make them merry. The world, with all its shallow entertainments, can’t satisfy our spiritual need for God. The Lord provides a perpetual banquet through his own presence, just as the Scriptures indicate: “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:8 NIV). We desperately need a spiritual breakthrough so we can experience triumphant joy rather than the gloom and lifelessness we often see in our churches. Only then will Scripture’s word-picture of the early church be true of us: “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts” (Acts 2:46b NIV). A fresh visit from the Holy Spirit can produce a new stream of joy from the Lord.
